I just read that Velvet Collection surpassed Game of Thrones and that is huge in the U.S. Does that show in Spain? Also I have a question on what hand do you wear an engagement and wedding ring. Pedro wore his on his right hand but now on left. I wondered if it had to do with him a widow. I'm very curious about spanish customs. Ty for all the work you guys do. Jodi

Velvet Collection and Game of Thrones are in the same platform in Spain, Movistar+ and Velvet has better (and the best) ratings. The window for selling shows to other countries are a bit weird, so Velvet Coleccion will be shown in other countries probably next year, maybe in the summer. I don't know if they will sell Netflix the rights though, since Netflix Spain is a competitor now, maybe for the rest of the world they can make a deal.
And the ring hand depends on the region in Spain. In most places, you wear the engagement ring on your right hand until the day of your wedding, then you change the right for the left hand and wear the wedding ring in your right, supposedly only in Catalonia and Valencia is the opposite. After the wedding you only wear the wedding ring on the right hand and keep the (expensive) engagement ring in a "safe" place (the nightstand in Rita's case), but this is common everywhere i suppose. In France it's like in the USA, Marie used her left hand. Pedro wears both, his and Rita's, wedding rings on his left hand though? He usually plays with both.

Thanks Alfi that helped. I know when I was stationed in Germany they also wore their wedding rings on the right hand so I wondered. So that clears it up. We in the state's proudly show our engagement ring and wedding ring. No putting it in a safe.đź’Ť I'm guessing that that custom might have changed with the times.

Interesting information. Thanks alfi for that tidbit!
As for the finale, what did you all think? Here's my take Mateo/Clara
I was so happy to have Mateo back in episode 9 but I KNEW the storm was coming and I HATE that they played Mateo like that. They made it seem as if he put his ambitions above Clara's by assuming she'd follow him when I don't think he'd really ever do that. He would have def consulted with her but it just seemed like a lazy excuse for the writers to start with the whole Sergio/Clara thing! That is what I’m more pissed about! There is simply NO NEED for that storyline! I get that Clara is supposed to be the main protagonist now but it doesn’t mean that just because Javier Rey isn’t available that they need to give her another love interest. Mateo/Clara are a fan favorite and the fact that they had them split up AGAIN with a stupid goodbye so now Clara will be free to pursue Sergio is ridiculous! After EVERYTHING that happened in Velvet and to ruin that relationship like this is extremely upsetting. There’s simply just NO romance between Sergio/Clara.Even if there was, Clara/Mateo are a tough one to beat. I don’t even know how they’re going to get back together, if they even will since they’re trying so hard to sell Sergio/Clara to us. As you can tell I'm extremely upset about this. lol
Raul
I love him! He's the best part about Velvet Collection and what happened at the end of this ep better not be the end of him.
Pedro
I'm glad he seems to be starting to move on. Though I've never really agreed with the idea that you have to try again at love when you lose your partner. If the right person comes along, sure.
Lourdes/Manolito/Ines
I want to enjoy Lourdes/Manolito but the fact that he kept pursuing Lourdes behind Ines' back just doesn't suit well with me. Which is funny coming from me considering Alberto did the same to Cristina. However, that's more understandable given the fact that Ana/Alberto's love made more sense to me than Lourdes/Manolito. They're cute but I feel like there was very little interaction between them for them to fall in love with each other. Lourdes was only there for like a month right? Also I feel really bad for Ines cause she's a nice girl.
Marie/Jonas What's Velvet without a wedding, right? lol I'm still bitter cause I wanted Jonas and Patricia so I won't comment much on this. It's fine, Jonas is married now and Marie is great.
Patricia I was so happy to see her back! Even though it was brief. I expected as much she'd have a scene with Enrique. I'm glad they're not together though.

I just copy/paste from a Spanish wedding site lol, i thought the engagement ring was on your left and the wedding on your right. At the end of the day every person is different and have different preferences, for example, the Spanish queen Letizia usually doesn't wear the wedding ring because it bothers her when shaking hands, and she never wears the engagement ring because it was a gift from king Felipe brother-in-law, accused of fraud.
As for the finale:
Mateo/Clara : I wonder if they are going to get Clara pregnant by Mateo because of that last night together, that would probably make him reconsider priorities in his life for a hypothetical come back or give Clara a better plot as a single mother and manager than a weird love interest. Because sincerely, i don't get this Clara and Sergio thing either, forced by screenwriters is an understatement. Mateo and Clara breaking up makes sense, even if forced by Javier Rey schedule, because they are in character, but Sergio, such a good guy pursuing a married woman? or Clara doubting about Mateo because she thought she lost him because she didn't speak with him for what? a couple of weeks? Besides there are no chemistry between them.
Raul. I didn't see that coming, there are no news of Asier leaving Velvet so i suppose it's going to be how they break up his relation with the gypsy?.
Pedro/Jonas&Marie. I loved how they used the letters and Marie as part of Pedro's arc recovery from losing Rita. Diana seems like a hurt person like Pedro, maybe both can help each other. The scene of Jonas and Pedro speaking about following signals was delightful, they really do a great couple on screen lol.
Lourdes/Manolito/Ines. Manolito doesn't love Ines, that's clear. If making Manolito a jerk was designed to make viewers uncomfortable, they really hit the spot with me, to plan a life together with such a sweet girl like Ines and then back stab her, not nice. With Lourdes soon the difference in classes will appear, she's Enrique and Barbara daughter, a rich girl, and he is a poor guy with not a very bright future. I wonder how the interaction will be between Pedro and Enrique, because Enrique did really awful things to Pedro in the past. The most likely situation would be Manolito losing both girls in the next season.
Patricia: Wow, what a comeback, the hippie aesthetic and long hair really suits her. I was smiling during all her scene with Enrique, his reaction faces for every Patricia's phrase were priceless. She was asking him to advertise her book so the door is open for the second season.
Sergio/Elena. I believed Elena was going to be the new "Ana", the new female protagonist, but her character right now is more close to a mixture of Carlos and Cristina. I don't think they want to make her character as unlikable as those two, but since the plot with Sergio and Clara stinks for me, I hope they really plan to make her character grow a lot in the second season and give us a decent romantic plot with Sergio. She may need to lose everything and start from zero, because now it's obvious that Clara totally outshines her in everything, as a woman and person and everything else. I totally understand Sergio preferring Clara over her.

We wear our engagement ring and wedding together, most of them are soldered together. I watched episode 10 twice. I loved most of it. I wasn't sure of Diana for a love interest for Pedro, but maybe likes attract. She is broken true so maybe they need each other. We will see. Jonas and his bride Marie, who looked stunning. The wedding was funny and sad. I hope Raul doesn't go off the show. Clara and Mateo love them together, they have so much passion. I can't wrap my head around her and Sergio.
Manilito is so young and not thinking right. Thank you for your hard work.

A slightly anticlimactic ending. I hated them splitting Mateo and Clara up. Hopefully over the course of season 2 they will realise they can't live without each other and get back together (again).
The Ines/Lourdes/Manolito triangle could've been a bit more impactful, it all felt a bit underwhelming and didn't paint Manolito in the best light. They've done much better love triangles
Loved Jonas and Marie - my favourite thing about Velvet Collection!
Poor Raul - I hope he comes back for season 2. I don't think i can cope with another death after Emilio and Rita
Overall I enjoyed Velvet Collection, but I personally think they need to trim the cast a bit. Velvet had a big cast but longer episodes and more of them. A lot of storylines felt rushed here as a result.

So I just finished Velvet Coleccion. I really loved seeing some of my favorite characters back on screen, but I just didn’t love it like I did Galerias Velvet. I was completely in love with the original show from the first minute; I don’t feel like they captured the same magic this time around.
I wanted to love it, but while I liked it alright I am not sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for season 2 especially after the whole Clara and Matteo ridiculousness. The show certainly has potential, but here’s hoping they pull from what they used to make Velvet Galerias so great. And maybe bring back more characters to guest star, like Ana and Alberto!
Thanks so much for translating and making it possible for us to see the show!

Okay, I finally finished binging the rest of Velvet Collection.
THE GOOD:
RAUL: He was the MVP this season.
THE HANDLING OF PEDRO'S GRIEF: I still hate that the show killed Rita (HATE IT). But if it had to be done, then this was the way to do it, by allowing space and time for Pedro to handle his grief on-screen, not just because it's good writing, but because the viewers deserve to see all of that play out, and it would have been cheap to just say, "Oh, Rita's not here anymore, but it's episode 1 of our brand new show, and Pedro's ready to move on with his life!" (MANY shows would have used such a time jump as an excuse not to dwell on the death of a major character -- Velvet Collection gave itself an out and then refused to take it. Respect.) There were so many wonderful moments, about the letters, about the clothes, and AL played everything, EVERYTHING he was handled so beautifully.
PEDRO/DIANA: I was surprised how much I took to the two of them. It makes perfect sense to me that Pedro would fit well with someone so full of empathy for his loss and who also appears to have an emptiness in her own life. In one episode, the writers did a much better job establishing this pairing than they did with any of the other pairings (Clara/Sergio, Manuel/Lourdes, Manuel/Ines, Jonas/Marie, Raul/the Sword) that they had multiple episodes to get right. Funny.
PALOMA: I really adore her -- she's easily the best of the new characters.
MUSIC CHOICES: Last time I posted about the show, I complained about some questionable music choices (a complaint I also had during Velvet Season 4). I don't know if I stopped paying as much attention or if there was some improvement in this area, but I didn't catch myself gritting my teeth and thinking, "That's so inappropriate! YOU COULD HAVE GONE WITH ANY OTHER SONG." I did notice, especially toward the end, a lot of music recycling (i.e., "Too Taboo" and "A Date With You" seemed to make an appearance in every episode), but the choices were appropriate for the scene, and that's all that matters, really.
THE REAPPEARANCE OF MRS. MONTESINOS: That was a wonderful and unexpected little cameo.
THE CAST: I have to give it up for this cast, one of the best on any show I've ever watched. They all commit and commit HARD, and they all seem to be having so much fun. Even in the stories I dislike.
Speaking of...
THE BAD:
JONAS/MARIE: I talked with VV about this. I know I could be accused of bias because I was bitter that they didn't explore Jonas/Patricia further than they did, but I feel as if Jonas/Marie's relationship was underdeveloped, and Marie as a character was ESPECIALLY underdeveloped. Even as I try to describe her personality, I find that I can't do much more than "she's kind and can be counted on to reach out to people in need" (i.e., her interactions with Blanca and Pedro). But that's it. I don't have a sense of anything else about her. The writers did a much better job developing Paloma and Lourdes.
I also didn't understand the little twist at the wedding when Jonas disappeared and then reappeared with the musicians. I thought the whole issue was that the men were worried Marie would feel upstaged. Did I misunderstand that? Because why, then, would Jonas pull that stunt? That choice DID end up upstaging Marie (not that she seemed to mind at all).
RAUL/THE SWORD: Dislike. All I see there is a strong physical attraction between the two men, but I feel like ultimately Raul would need more than that, and I really didn't like the recurring bit where the Sword was extremely jealous of every guy who dared look at Raul. Props to the writers, I guess, for having the guts to take the Sword's dangerous temper to its logical conclusion -- actually "going there" to show Raul physically hurt and possibly dead because of the Sword's behavior. I'm hoping that Raul is okay (I don't think they'd kill him, but I am scared he may be paralyzed) and that this puts an end to the relationship.
SERGIO/ELENA: I find both of them pretty bland and am really only rooting for them to keep Sergio away from Clara. If I were writing, I would have taken them in a love/hate direction (Sergio has reason to hate Elena, and she might have tried to hate him right back as a defense mechanism) and kept it there all season long.
GODO FAMILY DRAMA: I find myself not really caring about any of it.
ENRIQUE: I can still only tolerate Enrique in scenes where other characters talk about how much they hate him.
PATRICIA: I struggled with whether to talk about her in the "Good" section or this section. It's definitely good that we finally got to see Patricia. And it's good that she and Enrique are broken up. And I actually laughed at his initial reaction to Patricia's act and his asking her seriously if she was in a cult.
I just don't know what to make of the hippie stuff. MG's performance was signaling to me that Patricia's not serious and that this is a con of some kind -- if she were really all about peace and love, her personality would be TOTALLY different, but it wasn't -- she was the same old Patricia, very smug and very much enjoying teasing Enrique. If it's not meant to be an act, then MG played it all wrong. If it IS an act, then they'd better have her signed for S2 to explain what her angle is.
I also would have appreciated it if their conversation gave us a little more context for Patricia's conversion. When last we saw them, they were riding off into the sunset together (to my great disgust). When's the last time they saw each other? Who dumped whom? Was it mutual? I need more closure on the most toxic relationship in the history of this show if I'm going to believe they are finally, finally over.
Finally, if Patricia does come back during S2, I need/want it to be not this hippie stuff, but about her seeking a more serious foothold in Velvet. That was always one of Patricia's defining character traits, and it would allow for drama/story opportunity if, say, Alberto gave her some kind of role in the Barcelona outfit that would force her to work with Clara (and Jonas -- wait, who said that??).
THE LOSS OF "LAS CHICAS VELVET": In one of the last few episodes, I was watching Raul, Pedro, Jonas, and Manuel all flitting around one another dealing with some crisis, and I was struck by how suddenly male-heavy this show seems when compared to Velvet. Yes, Ana/Alberto were Velvet's flagship couple, but so much of the show was spent watching the women interacting with other women, i.e. the downstairs crew, Las Chicas Velvet and Blanca, or even Cristina/Ana or Cristina/Barbara. The women were all such strong presences, and that was part of the show's beauty/power.
Unfortunately, it's the female side of Velvet that took the hardest hit when Velvet became VC -- while several male characters from the original show have stuck around, Clara is the ONLY major female cast member to be on VC full time.
I don't blame the writers of VC for putting focus on the male characters we do remember from Velvet because we know them and are invested in them, and there's a value in featuring them, especially as they interact with each other down in the workroom.
But I think they could have done a better job fleshing out the new female characters and their relationships with each other. I don't need or want a new "Las Chicas Velvet" because that feels forced (like the scenes with Clara, Paloma, and Marie acting like BFFs -- it breaks the "show, don't tell" rule of fiction). But it would be nice to see something comparable.
THE UGLY:
CLARA/MATEO: A disaster. I get that JR couldn't or wouldn't be available for the whole ten episodes, but wasn't there a better way to handle it than this?
MANUEL/INES/LOURDES: The writers managed to totally ruin Pedro's son for me. I get that he's a teenager and that the writers really wanted to play up his impulsiveness as something that he has in common with Pedro. And it's not as if he's the first Velvet worker to be torn between a fiancee and "the other woman," what with Ana/Alberto/Cristina and Rita/Pedro/Rosa Marie.
But Manuel's romantic troubles were shallowly told when compared to those two stories. Unlike Alberto, Manuel is not being forced to marry Ines to save his family business. And Manuel is also actively, happily cheating on Ines with a girl he JUST MET, so he lacks the built-in sympathy that Alberto and Pedro had as they pined for women they had known and loved for much longer than they'd been engaged to Cristina and Rosa Marie, respectively.
However, all of this could be (somewhat) forgiven and certainly more compelling if Manuel seemed to have even a shred of serious, inner turmoil. There were times in S1 and S2 when I thought Alberto and Pedro were teetering on the edge of breakdowns due to their inability to break free of what they felt were their obligations so they could be with the women they really loved. I see none of that with Manuel. Instead, the show plays Manuel cheating on sweet little Ines like a great joke.
Why would I want to see either of these girls with him? Both deserve so much better.
MAX: WHERE. IS. MAX. Show, I have been so patient, and you have made SO MANY MISSTEPS. DO SOMETHING WONDERFUL FOR A CHANGE. Offer MI anything he wants, but GET MAX BACK.
FINAL VERDICT: IMO, there are some serious flaws, but nothing so bad that I won't watch S2 in the hopes that some of these issues will be addressed. I will always love the characters even if I don't love all of their stories, and this will always keep me coming back for more.

Love your commentary, northboundtrain. Your perspective and observations are great. I see by your call handle that you loved the BBC series North and South. So did I. Would love to have read your comments on that. Can't wait to read what you'll hopefully post about TdG. I read in the notes section of the Master Post for TdG on the Tumblr page that TdG is only a one season series. How unfortunate. IMO, I think it's way better than VC or LCdC and those two are going on multiple seasons. Go figure.

I don't think I've ever posted about it anywhere because my love for that show pre-dates my Tumblr, which is where I first used this sceenname. I think N&S is beautifully told, with rich characters and a love story that goes well with the social commentary on the nature of industry and the relationship between the mill workers and owners. Plus the cinematography, the music...all of it is great. If I get a chance, I'll post more thoughts in the Movie/TV section here on the board. I haven't gotten far into TDG yet because I wanted to finish VC first, but TDG is next on my list and I'll definitely be posting about that one here too. What I did see (I'm two episodes in), I really liked, and it definitely grabbed me more than Cable Girls did (though I do plan to eventually go back and give that one another try -- so difficult these days with so many new shows...). The tone, content, and even color palette remind me far more of Gran Hotel. It doesn't hurt that AS is the lead in both. Alfi can probably say more about TDG's reception in Spain, which may have something to do with its renewal chances. Then again, Netflix was also apparently a producing partner, since Netflix is billing it as a "Netflix Original" (like they are Cable Girls), so maybe if TDG does well when it airs later this month, there'll be more?
