GUIDE to Watching GRAN HOTEL on NETFLIX: Season 2
If you are watching Gran Hotel on Netflix, you have surely noticed that the Season 2 listing includes 28 episodes. However, the Spanish DVD for Season 2 includes only eight episodes. Why is that? Well, one reason is that the original Spanish episodes are each over an hour long, and Netflix has chosen to air the episodes in smaller chunks of 40+ minutes each. This is why when you watch the show on Netflix you sometimes see an episode suddenly end (fade out) in a strange spot that doesn't feel like a cliffhanger. That's because that wasn't originally meant to be the end of the episode. (You can generally tell when the episode was meant to end because of the dramatic cliffhanger music that accompanies most episode endings.)
Additionally, for whatever reason, Netflix took some of the Season 3 episodes and added them to Season 2 on Netflix, which is another reason why Netflix Season 2 is so much longer than Spanish Season 2.
Let me break it down this way:
Spanish Season 2 (Original Broadcast/DVD) Beginning: Julio writing a letter to his mother.
Netflix Season 2 Beginning: Julio writing a letter to his mother. (Yes, this is the same.)
Spanish Season 2 (Original Broadcast/DVD) Ending: Julio and Alicia, together in the secret room, hearing a sudden noise.
Netflix Season 2 Ending: The bombing at the hotel (which actually occurs midway through Spanish Season 3).
This guide is going to recap the episodes as they appear on Netflix, according to the Netflix episode numbering, though the guide will also indicate where the original Spanish episodes begin and end for the benefit of those watching the show on DVD.
As I re-watch the show, I will (slowly) be filling out an episode guide here with pictures and summaries so you can more easily find your favorite episodes/scenes on Netflix without much trouble.

---

* We learn that Andres survived the electrocution, though he was in a coma before miraculously awakening after receiving last rites from a priest.
* Julio tells his mother that he has decided to stay at the hotel because he believes someone tried to kill Andres, and Julio plans to investigate.
* Viewers learn that Alfredo has spent all this time in jail, though the family is telling people that he is out of the country.
* Viewers also learn that Javier, while managing supplies for the hotel, is actually directing a rum smuggling operation for Sebastian's tavern.
* Meanwhile, Teresa and Garrido have been searching the hotel for Don Carlos's letter (naming Andres as heir), but Belen has kept it hidden.
* Andres' most recent visit with the doctor reveals that he is now deaf in his right ear and must take morphine to help with the pain in his leg.
* Viewers meet new staff members -- Isabel, a young maid who likes Julio, and the cheerful, motorcycle-riding Don Ernesto, the new maître d'.
* Alicia and Diego return from their honeymoon, and as Julio watches Alicia from a distance, Ernesto notes to Julio that he can tell Julio likes Alicia.
* Teresa tells Diego that her lawyers (unbeknownst to Sofia) are actually keeping Alfredo in jail; Teresa has also arranged for Ayala to be demoted.
* Ayala, upset over the demotion, keeps busy by suggesting to Hernando (now his superior) that they investigate the origin of the tavern's rum.
* Alicia visits Andres and is shocked to run into Julio and learn that he's decided to stay at the hotel; the chemistry between them is still evident.
* An esteemed guest, Señor Bakthiari, arrives at the hotel and surreptitiously asks Javier to supply him with opium.
* Julio, getting no help from Jesús, the waiter who was on duty the night of Andres' accident, enlists Alicia's help by telling her his suspicions.
* After questioning Jesús, Alicia and Julio realize they need to get Ayala to dust the electricity levers for the assassin's fingerprints.
* Javier visits Sebastian's tavern and meets Bear, an intimidating man who claims he can get some opium for Javier to bring to Bakthiari.
* Belen administers Andres' first morphine shot, while Julio gets Isabel to stay with Andres while Julio and Belen work their shifts.
* Julio and Alicia put in motion a plot to stage a blackout and a robbery they can use to convince Ayala to dust the levers for fingerprints.
* Isabel is called away from Andres' room, leaving him asleep as a mystery figure who sneaks in and prepares to inject him with morphine.
* Julio runs back to Andres' room just in time to stop the figure from injecting Andres, but the figure escapes, unseen.
* After the party, Diego wants to sleep with a reluctant Alicia, but they are interrupted when Julio brings Alicia some tea as an excuse to see her.
* Julio tells Andres and Belen about the new attempt on Andres' life, and Andres wonders to a silent Belen why someone wants him dead.
* Ayala and Hernando arrive at the hotel, but Ayala's fingerprint dusting reveals too many prints to be able to tell one single culprit.
* Julio and Alicia meet at Room 22, which Julio saw Andres' mysterious assassin run to right after attempting to kill Andres.

* Isabel goes to Julio's room to meet him for their planned reading and writing lesson, but he is not there.
