Velvet 1x1 "Alas de mariposa"
Netflix/English Title: "Butterfly Wings"
SUMMARY
(Note: The Spanish version of this episode is considerably longer than the Netflix counterpart.
I'll note where the Netflix version ends -- anything else after that would have aired in Netflix 1x2.)
Alberto Marquez, heir to Velvet, returns to Madrid after spending several years in London; ostensibly, he is there for the premiere of his father, Don Rafael's, new collection, but he also wastes no time in resuming his relationship with childhood sweetheart Ana Ribera, a talented seamstress working at Velvet. Don Rafael, Alberto's stepmother Gloria, and Ana's uncle Emilio are all against the relationship, leading the young lovers to run away together on the night of the premiere. Rafael, frustrated both by Alberto's departure and a looming financial crisis at Velvet, commits suicide by falling out the window of his Velvet office. Alberto and Ana hear about Rafael's death on their car radio as they're heading out of town, and Alberto is so shocked that he loses control of and wrecks the car.
--END OF NETFLIX EPISODE--
--THE REST OF THIS FOOTAGE APPEARS IN SPANISH 1x1 and NETFLIX 1x2--
Ana is hospitalized following the car accident, and Alberto keeps vigil at her bedside until she wakes up, at which point he returns to his family home so he can see his father's body one last time. Tension mounts between Alberto and Gloria, who (unbeknownst to Alberto) is secretly hiding a letter Rafael left behind for his son. On the day of the funeral, Ana sneaks out of the hospital so she can support Alberto -- however, she is still so weak that she faints at the cemetery. Alberto rushes to Ana's side, picks her up, and carries her to his car, as all of the mourners at the funeral watch in shock.
