Hi! I'm caught up on season 3 now and am relieved about one thing. Do you guys remember how in the first episode the news of the Marquez's bankruptcy was leaked to the newspapers? Well I feared that Mateo was not a loyal employee/friend to Alberto. I'm really happy that the plot didn't go that way and that Mateo is a true caballero.

Hi! One of the reasons I was sort of slow to come around on both Mateo as an individual and Mateo/Clara as a couple was because I wasn't sure how to take Mateo as a character at first -- it was clear that Alberto loved him and trusted him, but Mateo also clearly enjoyed playing around with Clara and at the same time was pushing Alberto to give up Ana and marry Cristina. So I think early on I was wary of him potentially causing trouble.
That's what's made it a lot of fun to re-watch S1, so I can truly appreciate how awesome Alberto/Mateo's relationship is in those first few episodes: Mateo really IS good for Alberto (even if he wasn't initially on the Alberto/Ana train).

Northboundtrain,
You are so right about that! At moments Mateo was hard to read, but he is a good friend. Do you remember when he asked Alberto..."If Ana wasn't around, you could be happy with Christina?". He pushes Alberto, but with good intentions. I also liked that he stood up for Christina (who at that point was still a good person). That brings me to my next thought, I really liked that Christina was a likeable character. That's what made the show realistic for me. The other woman is not always this evil person. Christina genuinely loved Alberto and she did right by him (seasons 1-2 anyway. hahaha).

Oh, yes, looking back especially I can see that Mateo had better intentions than I initially thought: he didn't know Ana at the time and he also had a cynical view of marriage, so it's more understandable that he'd push Alberto toward Cristina.
I also agree with you that one of the admirable things about the show how it presented Cristina -- you're right, so many other shows would have made her a straight-up villain and snob so as to make the choice easier for Alberto and the audience. But the pre-S3 Cristina was basically kind and sweet.
