GUIDE to Watching GRAN HOTEL on NETFLIX: Season 3
If you are watching Gran Hotel on Netflix, you have surely noticed that the Season 3 listing includes 24 episodes. However, the Spanish DVD for Season 3 includes only 22 episodes. Why is that? Well, one reason is that the original Spanish episodes are each over an hour long, and Netflix has chosen to air the episodes in smaller chunks of 40+ minutes each. This is why when you watch a show on Netflix you sometimes see an episode suddenly end (fade out) in a strange spot that doesn't feel like a cliffhanger. That's because that wasn't originally meant to be the end of the episode. (You can generally tell when the episode was meant to end because of the dramatic cliffhanger music and the fact that the scene feels, well, like a proper cliffhanger!)
Additionally, for whatever reason, Netflix took some of the Season 3 episodes and added them on to the end of Season 2 on Netflix. So while the original Spanish Season 3 begins with the masked ball episode, Netflix Season 3 begins with the aftermath of the hotel bombing. The two versions just put their Season 2/Season 3 splits in different places.
This guide is going to recap the episodes as they appear on Netflix, according to the Netflix episode numbering, though the guide will also indicate where the original Spanish episodes begin and end for the benefit of those watching the show on DVD.
As I re-watch the show, I will (slowly) be filling out an episode guide here with pictures and summaries so you can more easily find your favorite episodes/scenes on Netflix without much trouble.

Episode 3x1/Part 43 (originally a portion of Spanish Ep. 3x9 "El primer día")
[pictures]
* Julio wakes up in the bombed-out hotel, which has now been converted to a makeshift hospital; in spite of his shrapnel wounds, he is determined to find Alicia.
* Andres (who appears to be unharmed) reunites briefly with Julio before running off to tend to Camila, who was badly injured by shrapnel.
* As guests, doctors, and nurses swarm around the hotel, Alfredo and Sofia can be seen looking unharmed but stunned by the carnage.
* Dona Angela also appears unharmed and is running part of the hospital efforts from the linen room in spite of her own exhaustion.
* Julio stumbles around the hotel in search of Alicia but only manages to find Ayala and Hernando, with Ayala reporting that he is also unable to find Alicia.
* As a shaken Teresa tries to make sense of the bombing, Diego coldly informs her that Alicia has been having an affair and was planning to leave him.
* Belen's attempts to run the staff are thwarted by Diego, who puts Dona Angela back in charge of things.
* Ayala and Hernando show Teresa the body of the actor who pretended to be from the Midday Club; he was shot with a shotgun, not killed in the explosion.
* A young nurse, Laura Montenegro, arrives at the hotel as part of a team to help tend to the bombing victims.
* Julio is surprised to hear from Mateo that Mateo saw an ambulance arrive, pick up Alicia and only Alicia, and then depart.
* Ayala, investigating Alicia's disappearance, hears from Diego (who believes Alicia left on her own) and Julio (who believes the ambulance kidnapped Alicia).
* Maite Ribelles, a lawyer and Alicia's best friend, arrives at the hotel and meets a cold Diego, who knows Alicia wrote to Maite about her plans to leave him.
* Ayala, Hernando, and Julio prepare some tracker dogs to see if they can track Alicia's scent on the road; Maite tries to accompany them, but Ayala refuses to let her.
* The dogs lead the men to the coast, where the ambulance has been abandoned and a ship, the Alma, is seen sailing off into the distance.
* A small group of soldiers and gravediggers are seen with a cart carrying a "dead" Javier, who manages to sneak off the cart when the group isn't looking.
* Diego meets with a mysterious new henchman at the hotel and instructs the henchman to help him find the hotel's new enemy by investigating all guests.
* After Sofia faints, a nurse mistakenly moves her to the makeshift morgue, where she wakes up and is further traumatized by the bodies around her.
* Javier arrives at the hotel, reunites with Sofia/Alfredo, and meets and flirts with Laura, revealing to her that he survived a firing squad when the bullet hit his flask.
* Ayala puts in a call to his headquarters informing them to be on the lookout for the Alma.
* When Julio finally faints due to his injuries, Ayala, Maite, and Hernando are forced to do emergency surgery on him to save his life.
* Andres (and an eavesdropping Belen) learn from Camila's nurse that Camila will recover but lost the baby she was secretly five months pregnant with.
* After Andres moves Camila into his room, Teresa warns him that as a respected Alarcorn he shouldn't have a mistress, but Andres isn't interested in listening to her.
* However, when Belen later approaches Andres to try to "comfort" him, he informs her that he plans to seek an annulment so he can be with Camila.
* Julio awakens and hallucinates Alicia at his bedside, only to realize that it is Maite, who introduces herself and tells him about the surgery.
* Andres comes to visit Julio, who tells him about Alicia's kidnapping, which Julio feels is his fault since he left Alicia alone to try to seek revenge on Diego.
* Sofia begins to suffer from nightmares related to her time in the morgue, so Alfredo gets her a psychiatrist, who begins to put her through a hypnosis session.

* Under hypnosis, Sofia comes close to confessing to murdering Beatriz, but Alfredo (thinking she's about to confess to killing Cristina) ends the session.
* Ayala informs Julio that he's gotten word that the Alma has docked, but Alicia is not on the ship.
* Diego receives a phone call from a woman who instructs him to bring her a document he has in his safe (viewers don't see it) in exchange for Alicia's return.
* Julio tells Ayala about Diego's phone call, which came from the coastal city of Santalla, so Julio, Ayala, and Maite use a hotel car to travel there.
* Alfredo is stunned to learn from Javier that even though Alfredo gave up his title to save Javier's life, Javier went before the firing squad anyway.
* Javier's intended courtship of Laura is thwarted when Teresa tells him he must find a wealthy heiress to marry in order to save the hotel from ruin.
* Diego arrives in Santalla (unaware that Julio, Ayala, and Maite are tailing him), prompting the woman to call a mystery man to tell him Diego has arrived.
* While spying on Diego, Julio and Maite share an awkward close moment that leaves Maite flustered afterward.
* Alicia is revealed to be tied to a bed in one of the rooms of the house in Santalla; she frees herself and uses a heavy pitcher to knock out the mystery woman.
* After Diego refuses to hand the document over to the mystery woman's henchman, the henchman threatens him with a gun and Julio is forced to intervene.
* A second henchman takes Maite hostage and threatens her at gunpoint before he is quickly killed by Ayala.
* Meanwhile, Alicia, trying to escape, happens to see a photograph that appears to be of Diego's wedding to another woman.
* Diego intentionally kills the first henchman and, when Ayala arrives on the scene, lies and tells Ayala that the gun going off was an accident.
* Julio's wound opens back up, meaning that Ayala, Diego, and Maite must take him back to the hotel for medical attention.
* Alicia is unable to call to them for help because the mystery woman has regained consciousness in time to re-capture Alicia.
--the rest of the episode is part of Spanish ep. 10--
* Ayala and Diego's argument about who is to blame for the failed rescue of Alicia is interrupted when Mateo announces that Alicia is back at the hotel.
* Alicia reunites with everyone at the hotel but says that she can't remember anything about her disappearance or even how she got back to the hotel.
* Ayala questions Mateo, who says he didn't see how Alicia got back to the hotel; Ayala and Julio wonder why her captors returned her.
* Once they are alone, Diego informs a distraught Alicia that he has no intention of annulling the marriage or letting her leave him.
* Alicia receives a mysterious present: a clock; that night, when the clock chimes, Alicia goes into a trance, removes a gun from the clock, and leaves her room.
* Julio finds Alicia about to shoot a sleeping Diego, she says for not giving her "the box." Julio manages to wake Alicia up, but she has no idea what happened.
* A shaken Alicia tells Julio and Maite that she does remember that on the estate where she was held she saw an old wedding photo of Diego and another woman.
* Julio, now worried for Alicia's mental state, urges her to run away with him; Alicia agrees, though neither one notices that Maite seems upset about it.
* After Sofia has another nightmare about the ghosts of Cristina and Beatriz, Alfredo worries that they should have continued with her therapy.
* Diego gives Julio a great deal of money as thanks for saving his life during the search for Alicia.
* Once Julio and Alicia have said goodbye to Andres and Maite, they leave the hotel and happily head off to catch the next train out of town.

* Unfortunately, Diego, having heard about Maite's trip, beats them to the priest's house and steals a mysterious document from off the wall.
* The priest, meeting with Maite and Julio later, says the document Diego stole is a newspaper article that mentions the death of Diego's first wife.
* Diego burns the article in the kitchen (though Violeta confronts him about it), then moves another document from his safe to a storage room.
* Next, he signs papers selling the hotel to Celia; after Teresa finds out, she calls for a henchman and they begin plotting another way to halt the sale.
